B vitamins and energy metabolism: how to read this claim on a label

Food provides energy; B vitamins take part in using it.

Proteins, fats and carbohydrates can provide the body with energy. B vitamins have a different role: they take part in the action of enzymes, which are proteins that help chemical reactions take place in the body. These reactions include, among other things, the use of nutrients.

Energy metabolism is the overall set of processes by which the body processes food components and uses the energy they contain. B vitamins are not fuel and do not themselves provide calories in the way a meal does. Their role can be compared to the part a mechanism plays in the operation of a device: food supplies the material, while some vitamins take part in the processes that use it. A greater quantity of these nutrients does not automatically mean proportionately more efficient functioning.

B vitamins are a group, not a single nutrient.

B vitamins include thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B6, biotin, folate and vitamin B12. Each has its own name and role. The term “complex” means a combination of several nutrients, but by itself it does not tell you how much of each vitamin is in a serving or which chemical form it is in.

A serving is a defined quantity of a product, for example one capsule or two tablets. Quantities on the label therefore need to be read together with the information about the serving they refer to. Health claims in the European Union assign specific functions to specific nutrients. For example, vitamins B6 and B12 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism. This claim does not mean unlimited improvement in performance, stimulation or treatment of tiredness whose cause is unknown.

Ingredient forms and reference values.

A label may include names such as methylcobalamin, which is a particular form of vitamin B12, or calcium methylfolate, which is a particular form of folate. These names tell you about the form of the ingredient. By themselves, they do not prove that everyone needs this particular form or that other forms have no value. Diet, absorption and the circumstances of the individual also matter.

RWS means the nutrient reference value used on food and supplement labels for adults. The percentage of the nutrient reference value is not an individual requirement or an upper safety limit. For vitamin B6, it is worth considering the total quantities from different sources. EFSA, the European Food Safety Authority, set a UL for adults - the tolerable upper intake level - of 12 mg per day from diet and supplements combined. mg means milligram, a unit of mass.

How to compare three CaliVita® products?

First, check what quantity of product the values refer to. The table below sets out the serving stated on the label, selected ingredient quantities and notable features of the formulation. It does not mean that one serving is a recommendation for a particular person. For B Complex, the values are given for two tablets, and for Pure B Complex+ they are given for one capsule.

µg means microgram, or one millionth of a gram; mg means milligram, or one thousandth of a gram. In the first row, 4 mg B6 and 4 µg B12 refer to two tablets in total. Do not read these values as quantities in one tablet. In the second and third rows, the values refer to one capsule. Since the serving on the B Complex label consists of two tablets, it is not the same as one capsule of the other products.

The comparison shows different approaches to the formulation; it does not indicate which product will be suitable for everyone. If you are interested in a broader combination of B vitamins with additional ingredients, you can check the ingredients of B Complex or Pure B Complex+. If you are comparing products by their B12 content, Pure Energy B12 has a more focused formula. The quantity of B12 alone does not describe the whole formulation or determine individual needs.

Ingredients in one Pure B Complex+ capsule.

The Polish product label PDF Pure B Complex+ lists, among other things, a mixture of organic fruit and vegetables in a quantity of 140 mg per capsule. The ingredients list names the following components of the mixture:

• Organic dwarf apple fruit powder: 10 mg.
• Organic blackcurrant fruit powder: 10 mg.
• Organic lowbush blueberry fruit powder: 10 mg.
• Organic broccoli powder, stem and florets: 10 mg.
• Organic carrot root powder: 10 mg.
• Organic cranberry fruit extract, at a ratio of 4:1: 10 mg.
• Organic grape seed powder: 10 mg.

The ratio 4:1 in the extract name describes the ratio used in its preparation; it is not the quantity in a product serving. In addition to this mixture, the product contains B vitamins and a small quantity of Q10, or coenzyme Q10. Its folate is in the form of calcium methylfolate. These are details about the ingredients, not guidance on who needs the product.

Consider the whole day and all sources.

When analysing a diet, the regularity and variety of meals and the energy they provide all matter. Someone following a plant-based diet may have separate questions about B12, while absorption disorders require medical assessment. A supplement does not replace food or sleep.

Before combining several complexes, it is worth listing ingredients that occur more than once and checking their quantities over the whole day. This applies in particular to nutrients that may come from the diet and several products at the same time. It is also worth distinguishing the values given for a serving on the label from those for a single tablet or capsule, and from an individual recommendation.
