CaliVita® recommends Liver Aid to people looking after their diet when they often eat fatty, heavy meals, and while working on body weight. The main ingredient is milk thistle extract, which the manufacturer associates with liver function and digestion. Two capsules contain one hundred and twenty milligrams of milk thistle extract, including a guaranteed ninety-six milligrams of silymarin. Silymarin is a group of natural compounds in milk thistle. Thirty-six milligrams of that amount is silybin, one of those compounds. This guaranteed content is called standardisation: it tells us how much silymarin is in a serving, not just the weight of the extract. The other ingredients have different roles in the body. Choline helps build cell membranes, the thin coverings around cells. L-carnitine helps move fats to parts of the cell where they can be used for energy. Arginine and ornithine take part in converting ammonia, formed when proteins are broken down, into urea. The body then removes urea in urine. Methionine is needed to make proteins and can be converted into cysteine. Cysteine helps make glutathione, which cells use for protection. Chromium helps the body process carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, while selenium helps protect cells from oxidative stress, the effects of excess reactive molecules that can damage them. The manufacturer recommends two capsules a day after a meal.
