Vitamin D: what does it do and where does it come from?
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. In the body, it helps regulate calcium and phosphate balance, meaning the balance of calcium and phosphorus. It helps the body absorb and use these nutrients properly and maintain healthy bones. It also supports the normal functioning of muscles and the immune system. Describing these functions is not a promise that a particular supplement will prevent disease.
Vitamin D comes from food, some fortified products and skin synthesis. Skin synthesis is the production of the vitamin in the skin under the influence of UVB radiation, which is part of sunlight. In autumn and winter, conditions for this process in Poland are limited. This does not simply mean a seasonal change in the absorption of the vitamin from the digestive tract, and the calendar alone does not determine an individual's needs.
D3, the amount on the label and the carrier
D3 is cholecalciferol, one form of vitamin D. When comparing labels, check which form the product contains, how much vitamin is in the stated amount of product, and which other ingredients it contains. A serving means a specified amount of product, for example the stated number of drops. One tablet, on the other hand, is a single unit; a serving and one unit do not always mean the same thing.
The CaliVita® range includes the liquid D-drops liquid vitamin D and tablet VITAMIN D 2000 IU. IU stands for “international units”. The D-drops label gives the amount of vitamin D in micrograms (µg) and IU. A microgram is a unit of mass; 1 µg is one millionth of a gram. MCT means medium-chain triglycerides - a type of fat used as a carrier in the drops. A carrier is an ingredient in which another ingredient is dissolved or with which it is delivered.
VITAMIN D 2000 IU declares 50 µg of vitamin D in one tablet. The liquid and tablet forms may suit different preferences, even when the amount of vitamin being compared is the same.
How do you read the D-drops servings?
The Polish D-drops label states 20 µg, or 800 IU, in two drops, and 50 µg, or 2000 IU, in five drops. These figures refer to two different amounts of product. Do not simply choose the largest value in the table and assume it is a serving for everyone. The label distinguishes between groups and gives conditions and instructions for use, which must be read alongside the amount.
Let's compare five drops of D-drops with one tablet of VITAMIN D 2000 IU. Five drops contain 50 µg of vitamin D, and one tablet also declares 50 µg. The table shows these amounts side by side. This does not mean that individual recommendations are automatically interchangeable: it describes the content in a specified amount of product, not a decision about how much to take.
| Product and amount of product | Vitamin D in this amount | What are we comparing? |
|---|---|---|
| D-drops: 5 drops | 50 µg (2000 IU) | Amount in five drops |
| VITAMIN D 2000 IU: 1 tablet | 50 µg (2000 IU) | Amount in one tablet |
Both rows show 50 µg, but the amount of product differs: in the first case it is five drops, and in the second, one tablet. The table makes it easier to compare the declared content; it does not say what amount is suitable for a particular person. When choosing a form, convenience, tolerance, medicines being taken and other sources of the vitamin may be relevant.
What do studies show, and what do they not establish?
The link between vitamin D and calcium balance is well described. The picture from studies of additional effects in people without a deficiency is more complex. Results may depend, among other things, on participants' initial status, their age, the amount of vitamin and the outcome being assessed. The fact that vitamin D has a role in the normal functioning of the immune system does not prove that every supplement prevents infections.
Assessing requirements and deciding whether to have a test are separate clinical matters. 25(OH)D is a form of vitamin D measured in a blood test, and the result may be one element of an assessment. The meaning of the result and the reasons for testing depend on the individual's situation. Guidelines for different population groups may vary and are not automatically instructions for every reader.
A product with vitamin D alone versus a combined formula
Ca-Mg with D+K combines vitamin D with calcium, magnesium and vitamin K. One tablet declares 5 µg of vitamin D, or 200 IU. This is a different composition from products focused on vitamin D. When comparing formulas, consider all the ingredients, not just the amount of vitamin D.
A liquid requires accurate measuring and storage. A tablet has a fixed declared amount per unit, while a combined formula contains additional ingredients. These are specific differences that may help when comparing CaliVita® products, without assuming that one form will be best for everyone.
CaliVita® product comparison
The comparison describes the products’ composition and form. It does not determine individual requirements or provide supplementation recommendations.
| Product | Composition and serving | What makes it distinctive | When this option may be suitable |

The label distinguishes between amounts of product and age groups, making it possible to check how many drops correspond to each declared amount. | May suit people who prefer a liquid form and measuring drops.
