Hydrolysed collagen: what to check beyond the product name
Collagen in the body and collagen in a supplement are different stages. Find out what hydrolysis is, how to read research findings and compare CaliVita® formulations.

Collagen in the body and in a product are not the same thing
Collagen is a family of proteins that form part of the body's tissues. There are several types, found in different structures. The body makes collagen from available components. Collagen consumed in a product does not automatically reach a particular place in the body unchanged.
After consumption, protein is digested and may undergo further changes. The type of collagen describes the raw material, but by itself does not indicate where the ingredient will act. Research findings should therefore be considered in relation to a specific question and the preparation studied, not solely its name.
What is hydrolysis, and how does it differ from undenatured collagen?
Hydrolysis is a process that breaks larger molecules into smaller fragments. In collagen, this produces peptides, which are shorter protein fragments. Their size and properties can vary. The source of the collagen, how it has been processed and the composition of the finished material all matter. The word “hydrolysed” alone does not mean that all preparations are the same as the product used in a particular study.
Undenatured type II collagen is a distinct form whose specific structure has been preserved. It differs from hydrolysed collagen. If a formulation contains both forms, they should not be treated as one substance by simply adding their weights together without taking this distinction into account.
How should you read research reviews with care?
A meta-analysis is a review that combines the results of several or many studies. Its conclusions depend, among other things, on the quality of those studies and on how comparable they are. A meta-analysis from 2025 on the skin found a difference between the results for the full set of studies and assessments of subgroups grouped by quality and funding. This does not provide a basis for presenting the effect as certain for every preparation.
Positive results from some studies are part of the available evidence, but its limitations must also be taken into account. Studies may involve small groups of people, different formulations and different measurement methods. Therefore, results obtained for a specific collagen in a specific study cannot automatically be attributed to all CaliVita® products. Nor should they be used as a basis for promising rejuvenation.
Vitamin C is a separate ingredient with a separate claim
An authorised claim for vitamin C states that it contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of tissues. This relates to the role of vitamin C itself and applies under specific conditions. The presence of vitamin C in a product does not confirm every possible effect of the complete blend.
When comparing formulations, check the amounts of hydrolysed collagen, vitamin C and other ingredients separately. Hyaluronate, glucosamine or coenzyme Q10, also known as Q10, change the composition of the product. The amount of collagen alone does not describe the full composition.
What do the labels of three CaliVita® products show?
A serving is a specified amount of a product to which the values shown on the label apply. It is not necessarily the same as one individual item, such as one capsule. The comparison below shows the amounts listed on the labels described. This makes it possible to check whether the figures apply to a serving or an individual capsule, and to compare the format and types of ingredients.
| Product and amount described on the label | Collagen | Other ingredients and features |
|---|---|---|
| GlamUp Pure, serving 11 g | 10 g hydrolysed bovine collagen | Powder; vitamin C, hyaluronate, Q10 and other ingredients |
| RiseUp Pure, serving 11,25 g | 8000 mg hydrolysed type II bovine collagen; separately, 40 mg undenatured type II collagen | Powder; a broader range of ingredients, including glucosamine from crustaceans |
| Beauty Formula, 1 capsule | 250 mg type I + III collagen from fish | Multi-ingredient capsule with amino acids, hyaluronate, vitamin C and zinc |
How should you read the first row? GlamUp Pure lists 10 g of collagen in a serving weighing 11 g. A gram (g) and a milligram (mg) are units of mass; 1 g is 1000 mg. In the full serving of 11 g, 10 g is therefore collagen, while the remaining mass is made up of other ingredients. Check the serving size and how it is measured separately on the label.
In RiseUp Pure, the amount of hydrolysate and the amount of the undenatured form are listed separately. They should not be presented as one undifferentiated amount of collagen. In Beauty Formula, the amount applies to one capsule, not to a serving comprising an unspecified number of capsules. The comparison describes only the declared composition, not a recommended amount to consume.
CaliVita® product comparison
The comparison describes the products’ composition and form. It does not determine individual requirements or provide supplementation recommendations.
| Product | Composition and serving | What makes it distinctive | When this option may be suitable |
|---|---|---|---|
| GlamUp Pure | 330 g 1 serving (11 g) contains Hydrolysed collagen (bovine): 10 g Alpha-lipoic acid: 100 mg Vitamin C: 80 mg Hyaluronic acid: 75 mg Pomegranate fruit extract (DER 45:1): 50 mg Of which ellagic acid (standardised to 45%): 22,5 mg Coenzyme Q10: 50 mg Sweet potato tuber extract (DER 6:1): 40 mg | Powder with bovine collagen, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and additional ingredients. The formulation combines several ingredients in one blend. | May be of interest to people who prefer a powder with collagen, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and Q10. When taking medicines, it is worth considering the full label and its warnings. |
| RiseUp Pure | 1 serving (11,25 g) contains (confirmed on the Polish PDF label) Hydrolysed collagen (bovine) type II: 8000 mg Rosehip extract (4:1): 1250 mg Glucosamine sulphate (from crustaceans): 666 mg Of which glucosamine: 400 mg Chondroitin sulphate: 444 mg Of which chondroitin: 400 mg Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM): 250 mg Hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate): 100 mg | The powder combines hydrolysed collagen with separately declared undenatured type II collagen and additional ingredients. These are distinct forms of collagen. | May be of interest to people who want to compare different forms of collagen and a broader range of ingredients. The glucosamine comes from crustaceans, which is relevant when considering allergens. |
| Beauty Formula | 60 capsules 1 capsule contains Type I + III collagen (from fish): 250 mg Horsetail herb extract (10:1): 150 mg Of which silica (standardised to 7%): 10,5 mg L-methionine: 50 mg L-cysteine: 50 mg Hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate): 30 mg Vitamin C: 20 mg Zinc: 10 mg | A multi-ingredient capsule with fish collagen, amino acids, hyaluronate, vitamin C and zinc. It does not need to be prepared as a drink. | May suit people who prefer multi-ingredient capsules. The amount and source of collagen, which is fish, differ from those of the powders. |
